- What makes you come alive?
- What are you passionate about?
- What matters to you?
- How do you want to feel physically, emotionally & spiritually?
Last week's #52PickMeUp was about the importance of BEING YOU; giving up your people-pleasing tendencies and living authentically. But, here's the thing: if you're accustomed to letting your life be shaped by the values, beliefs and expectations of others, you might not know who the real you is.
I personally didn't take my bold leap into authenticity until I was twenty-three years old. Yep, I was an unfortunate late bloomer. I grew up in a liberal town but in a conservative religion that dictated all of my beliefs about moral, social and political issues. It gave me a narrow view of the world, the future of the world and those outside of our religion. Furthermore, I was taught how to defend "my beliefs" using the Bible. But I didn't feel in alignment. I played the role of the upright Jehovah's Witness for awhile, but I felt like I was betraying myself, my potential and my purpose. So when I got a totally unexpected opportunity to move to NYC and pursue my dream of becoming a professional dancer, I snagged it. I left my small town and my religion and started the process of finding myself.
But the process of "losing my religion" made me realize that I didn't know who I was. At all! I wasn't raised to be a critical thinker. I wasn't raised to do any soul-searching. I wasn't raised to listen to my gut. Up until age twenty-three, my morals, values and beliefs were predetermined. So for the first time ever, I had to DIG DEEP, get really honest with myself, and figure out who I was and what I needed in order to live a fulfilled life.
What I know now is that, when you're clear about who you are plus what you want, need and expect in life, it empowers you to make choices in alignment with your soul. You get to live your purpose! You get to experience the power of creating your life rather than letting life happen to you. You get to focus your attention and energy on achieving your wants, needs and desires without letting the disapproval of others distract you.
So, know what you need to feel fulfilled and make choices that support your desires.
