- Do you often feel lonely?
- Do you feel misunderstood?
- Do you feel unheard and unsupported?
- Do you feel like you don't belong anywhere?
Who doesn't wanna feel like they belong? It's human nature to want to feel loved and accepted by others. And that's exactly why choosing your tribe is such an important decision. Because not everyone is going to love and accept you, no matter how badly you want them to. No matter how much you try to mold and shape yourself (even subconsciously) into someone that shares the same core values, mindset, beliefs and interests as they do. People can sniff out inauthenticity and will treat you accordingly. Besides, being inauthentic leaves you feeling invisible, undervalued, disconnected, unsupported and unsatisfied in your relationships. That's when you know you haven't chosen the right tribe.
Friendship is a choice. Who you spend your time and life experiences with is your prerogative. So how you want to feel in your relationships should dictate who you choose as friends. Because who you hang with can deeply influence your self-worth, sense of purpose, level of success and happiness; as much as your ability to trust others and experience vulnerability and emotional intimacy. If you're uncomfortable exposing your true self; including your feelings, opinions, beliefs, hopes, fears, struggles, successes, and failures, you have not found your tribe. But your gut knows that, right?
Instead, choose the people you can be transparent with. The people who want you to flourish. The ones who love you unconditionally and will support you through your big victories and small successes as much as your losses and your failures. The ones who listen to your dreams and believe in them, maybe more than you do. The ones who become your proud cheerleaders every step of the way, especially when fear and self-doubt threaten your progress. The ones who, when tragedy strikes, are emergency responders rather than rubberneckers. The ones who won't let you pick up the pieces alone but listen intently because they want to understand how you're feeling and however they can support you.
You will know when you've chosen the right tribe because your outer-world will start to match your inner-world. Your spirit will stop feeling restless and you will experience the peace of belonging.
